ABOUT LA MANZANILLA JALISCO MEXICO.

La Manzanilla is a small fishing village on the Pacific Coast, which is located 1 hour north of Manzanillo, and 3 hours South of Puerto Vallarta in an area called Costa Alegre, which means Happy Coast. The neighboring areas are Barra de Navidad, Boca de Iguanas, Carayes, Melaque, Punta Serena, and Tenacatita,

You can take a guided tour into the Lagoon which is a federally protected Ecological Zone and see the animals including, Caiman's (Alligators), Heron, Ibises, Egrets and Kingfisher's. A truly exciting nature experience.

The Bay of Tenacatita has some of the best fishing in Mexico including Huachinango, Tuna, Dorado, Jack, and Sailfish. Across the Bay is safe harbor for many sailboats and power yachts. There are locals who will take you out fishing or on a tour of the area. Ocean and beach animals include Porpoises, Whales, Frigates, Pelicans, Cormorants and more.

There are a couple of places you can rent snorkeling equipment and Kayaks. The kayaking is excellent with many places close by to go diving in clear warm waters that abound with sea life. The beaches of Mexico are beautiful and the beach you will enjoy while at Casa Maguey Tropical Mexico vacation rentals are no exception. Tenacatita Bay protects the local beaches from the open ocean; the waves and the slope of the beach are gentle with several places to go for total privacy.

There is usually one of the fishing boats with a yellow Banana thing tied to it to give the kids rides but you cannot always count on that happening. There is no Parasailing and you can not rent jet skis, which keeps the area quiet and peaceful.
Once in a while there will be vendors walking the beach selling different things but it is not a bothersome thing like it can be in some areas where almost every other minute someone is asking you if you want to buy something. All in all it is a pretty laid back beach.

Some other activities are Horseback riding, snorkeling, hiking, mountain biking and some of Mexico's best golf courses as close as Tamarindo (which is only about 10 minutes away) and Isla Navidad. There is also a waterfall close by that you can hike to and almost always find a place to be alone. The entire area is a natural wonderland.

You can sign up with Immersion Adventures and discover the natural and cultural wonders of the Central Pacific Coast of Mexico with the experts in educational adventure travel. See the links page for more information.

The people here in La Manzanilla are mostly Mexican, many of the families that live here have been here for generations. This is a fishing village; it has been one for a long time and will remain so in the foreseeable future.

Most of the tourist that come here are Mexican and come from Guadalajara and other nearby cities to use the beach and for the religious holidays. Other that that there are a Few Canadians, a few Americans, a few Germans and a few others who live here year round. During the peak season we have many Canadians and you can add a few to the other totals as well.
The age group here is fairly evenly spread out between 50 plus and under 50. This is not just a retirement community nor is it a hot spot, it has a very special balance.
In fact if you were looking for nightlife you would be better off doing the 17-kilometer drive to Melaque or Barra de Navidad. There is fun here but it is usually a family kind of fun around the Jardine on the weekends, a wedding or a 15th birthday party kind of thing.
The Jardin, which is a square in the center of town is where many of the locals gather each evening to relax, it also has a beautiful Kiosk built by local artist Richard Rowley.

In La Manzanilla we have several small grocery stores, a couple of hardware stores, a pharmacy, and schools. We have fresh fish daily in town, a tortillaria and several restaurants varying all the way from Tacos on the street to award winning chefs.
We do not have a post office, barbershop, hair salon, ice cream store, gas station, auto parts store, dentist or things of that nature. There is a medical Clinic in town.

La Manzanilla does not have paved streets, but it does have street lights for safety at night. There is not even a stop sign in this quaint little town and you would have to go all the way to Cihuatlan before you will see the one and only stoplight between Santiago (near Manzanillo) and Puerto Vallarta! No wonder they call this particular section of Mexico Costa Alegre (Happy Coast)!

The closest city is Melaque (about 17 kilometers from here). You can get there either by bus (which runs frequently and often) or by car to do the serious shopping, to pick up mail, use the Internet or go to the dentist etc.
What you can not find in Melaque you might find in Barra De Navidad (nightlife), Cihuatlan, or Manzanillo (almost everything) which is about an hour to the South. Some drive to Puerto Vallarta (three hours to the north) or Colima (two hours to the South) for those special items and to sight see these beautiful cities of Mexico.

Most of Mexico is either warm or hot, what makes it not to hot is any kind of breeze, especially one off the ocean like La Manzanilla has each afternoon. The breeze usually dies down around sunset giving La Manzanilla the perfect weather for you to enjoy a great Mexico vacation holiday.

Here in La Manzanilla the crime rate is practically zero. Once in a while some stealing will occur but it is when someone from out of town comes here with the sole purpose of stealing. They take advantage of people who are used to leaving their keys in the ignition and their house unlocked. The small town atmosphere is also a deterrent because the people who do not live here are easily recognized as outsiders.
There is an army base within 16 kilometers of La Manzanilla which ia a help in keeping the crime rate in La Manzanilla and the surrounding area low. We do not have police in town but the Federal police come in once in a while and the police presence in the surrounding area is high.

La Manzanilla is a very safe place to vacation, there is usually no problem when walking around even the darkest back streets at night. I know a few young single women who live here alone and have had little or no problems. Of course this is still planet earth and normal precautions always apply.

Here in La Manzanilla we are on the arrival side of the Manzanillo airport, which is about a one hour drive to the South. There are very few flights in and out of the airport to begin with and the airport is far enough away that the planes are still quite high in the air as they pass over head. We hardly hear them at all and if we do hear them it is the engines backing off for a landing not under power taking off. La Manzanilla is a quiet town, which will allow your Mexico vacation here to be peaceful and relaxing.

Hurricanes hit some areas hard and some never get more than a lot of rain. La Manzanilla fits into the latter of the two due to its position on the Bay of Tenacatita. Research completed at weather.unisys.com and found that there were no Hurricanes to hit La Manzanilla since they started keeping track in the 1949!
