Hi there, I don't believe we have met yet but I will be returning to La Manzanilla at the end of November. I drove down in January with my two daughters and ran into the same situation when returning from Mexico into the States (I live on Vancouver Island in BC). I didn't turn in my car sticker, thinking it wouldn't be a big deal. Turns out, it is!! I had decided to sell the car I had and found out that I needed to have a Mexican customs official personally remove the sticker.... this created a significant problem as the closest border is Tijuana! I tried everything - contacted consulates in Vancouver and Mexico City. I was told that at certain times of the year there are customs agents in certain US cities (closest one for me was Los Angeles) but the timing didn't work for me. To make a long story short, I had to drive to Tijuana and turn in my car permit! It was grueling as I only had a weekend to do it. My daughter and I drove non-stop, turned in the permit and drove back home to Vancouver Island in less than 3 days. The agent in Tijuana told me that it was a good thing I had turned it in personally before selling the car - he said that otherwise I would never have been given another car permit for Mexico. He also advised me to bring all the papers with me when I return. One of the consulate connections I had made had told me that it has been a difficult situation since 2003 when Mexico changed it's laws with regards to permits. I hope this is helpful to you, please feel free to contact me if I can be of any further help. Linda B. |
