Navajoa has many great motels.. sort of a major stop over for visitors heading up to Alamos for the day...Alamos pretty expensive for a stopover unless you have already made reservation at a good B&B. Recommend the hotel Casa de Tesoros on calle Obregon, (Alamos) as it has been in business since the 1950's/ mind blowing because it is really a 400 year old convent. I think there are about 30 rooms but you can usually get one without a reservation. Also Los Mochis next town 75km south has good hotels and motels. From Navajoa to Mazatlan is a real long and tiring drive, lots of industry on the carretera but 90km from Mazatlan just after the Sinaloa-Nayarit border is a town turnoff to the left-(Acaponeta) in town to your right is a motel(Estancia de Canales) gated 2 story, 330 pesos for 2 double beds, clean and has AC, the old hotel downtown on the plaza has a good restaurant and there is also a steak house that's well thought of. I would not go as far as Tepic unless you are sightseeing there...Huichol's etc..or want to go on the expressway to Guad...the roads in and out of Tepic are winding mountain roads and it takes hours. The short way to go to PV and LaManz. turn off where at highway 15 there's an overhead sign points to Santiago Ixcuintla and just as you get into Santiago turn left and cross over the river at the bridge and take the road thru Villa Hidalgo to San Blas and then follow the coast to Las Varas where you get on the highway again (it's now changed from 15 to 200) and this takes you right into PV...again unless you want to visit Tepic (great motels), I would avoid it..esp. the road to Compostela.
