Stephanie, Thanks for expressing interest in the Helping Hands Bookstore contributing to the auction. Although we consider it very important to help the elementary school & kinder directly with funds, as they don’t have the funding the middle school receives for participating in the “Escuelas de Calidad” program (quality schools), we also feel it is imperative to assist with the educational needs of the community. Accordingly, La Catalina Foundation’s charter goes beyond fund-raising for the schools directly. We are interested in helping to raise the education level and opportunities in the community, as outlined in our strategic plan. This requires that, in addition to making direct contributions to the schools, our funds are earmarked, for the most part, to run the educational programs that we sponsor. There may be a misperception that by hosting the auction at the Elementary School, all of the funds are for the schools. The elementary school has been kind enough to offer the grounds to run the auction, with the understanding that the silent auction is primarily a fund-raiser for the growing education programs that La Catalina Foundation sponsors in the schools and community. From last year’s auction proceeds, $5000p went to the primary school, $2000p to the Middle school, and $2000p to the Kinder for specific projects they were requesting funds for. Depending on the requests from the schools for funds this year & what the total proceeds are, we will determine how much to give directly to the schools but typically it’s about 25% of the proceeds and 75% percent managed by La Catalina Foundation to maintain our educational programs (you can get an update on the programs we are running on our website at www.lacatalinafoundation.com and by reading our winter 2007 newsletter which you can also find there). Also, as you may have heard, the Ejido is working on a collaborative project with us where they are donating a lot to La Catalina Foundation (hooray!) designated for the construction of a small educational center with a community classroom and computer lab where the kids & community members can come to for free or subsidized English, math, tutoring, and computer classes. Some of the auction proceeds will also be earmarked for the construction of this educational center. So these are some of the things that your donation will go towards. If you prefer that your full donation go to one of the schools, then it would be best to make a direct contribution to them. I know the elementary school is working on a campaign to rebuild the fence that goes around the play yard and are trying to raise funds for this, for which we will be contributing, as well. Let us know when you want to get back in the schools to help out with the English classes. We will be losing some of our teacher’s assistants after March, and will need help in April and May. We also may need some help with our adult English classes in mid April & May, as we will be in transition waiting for our new intern to arrive, who will take over these classes in June. Also, we would love to have your help at the auction again. Thanks for your support, Stephanie, and all you are doing to make a positive difference in La Manzanilla! Julie & Victor |
