Thank you Daniel for being alert to the intimidation factor here with Sr.Simmons, and for looking into Mexican law regarding this issue of gringos' political activity. Developing the playa involves a lot of money,no surprise here, and powerful interests. Up near Careyes Roberto Hernandez, our neighbour-owner at El Tamarindo and pres. of Banamex, plans to build a waterfront development with many many condos and a large marina. SEMARNAT's impact assessment ruled against it, however 8 days before President Fox left office he signed approval of this tourist development, which jeopardizes fragile marine habitat. We need to be aware that while we are dealing with small players at this moment, larger players may be in the wings. I think we need to be factually clear, publicly supported, and STICK TOGETHER while we contribute to the long term health of this ecology, and this economy. Personally, I think our profile as consumers of tourist services here in Mexico; we are a target population whose opinions are of deep economic interest to the govt., gives us the opportunity to strengthen the credibility of SEMARNAT, the min. of environment and PROFEPA, it's enforcement arm, as well as signal to the govt. that holidays in the midst of habitat destruction are not favoured by tourists, or gringo members of coastal communities. Thanks to all of you who have signed the petition. |
