The Imperial Woodpecker is presumed extinct and was last reported in 1956, and was not never in this region at that time either, so if that is really what you saw, then this is an international story on par with the Ivory-billed woodpecker sighting about two years ago in Arkansas. Likely it was the Pale-billed, or Lineated, Woodpecker, both of which are found here and look similar to the Imperial. In any case, I´m happy to hear that you´re seeing woodpeckers--always a good sign! |
