It is an intesting article. When the people from the Centro de Salud came around checking pilas and houses, they said water needed to be standing for 3-5 days before eggs were laid (not sure if this is correct or not) They also came inside the house and put the little white granules in all the plant trays, in every pail or lid or anything that was outside. They were very thorough, but I know they did not do the same for every house - some people did not even get visited. I often wonder about all the water that stands in the streets (shady spots) from people running water from pilas and washing machines directly into the street. This is hard to change since people have been doing this for many years. All those plastic bottles(or bags) that get tossed someplace out of sight like on an empty lot for example can hold water for a long time and are in places where noone would even see them. It is change in mindset (like so many other things) that is necessary, and that will only come with education. Possibly we need the dengue experts to go into the schools and teach the kids how to clean up their home environments so they can educate the parents. We all need to do whatever we can. I had dengue, and it was not even the hemoragic kind, but it was bad enough. WE had a lot of cases here this year so we need to really pay attention to this. Linda |
