The folks north of us at Careyes really have their hands full when it comes to illegal development!! And they are fighting back in a big way. I was following up a news article in Fri.´s Miami Herald, about how the ¨Council for the Defence of the Pacific Coast¨ was taking PROFEPA (that´s the enforcement arm of SEMARNAT, the sec. of the environment) to court, and I came across http//theecologistvoice.blogspot.com/. (the motto is ¨defending the environment from speculation¨)It has all the latest stuff about how our neighbour Roberto Hernandez is building a mega resort despite the law,and without legal permits, and the campaign to get Calderon to enforce environmental laws. There´s an open letter to Calderon, in the New York Times, that`s very informative. I think the Council for the Defence people includes Alix Goldsmith (??), daughter of James Goldsmith, who bought the land that is the Chamels Biosphere Reserve, and gave it to the Mexican state. Here in La Manzanilla, we are waiting for PROFEPA to come, together with the environmental lawyers who are directing these efforts, and meet with us about our DENUNCIA of illegal beach development. We intend to invite the scientists from CUCSUR as well. Seeing how PROFEPA has been corrupted is disturbing to say the least. We can be glad the heat is on, and that we have allies. My motto is ¨Never say never¨. Dave or I will keep you posted as best we can. I´m going north to visit family for 6 weeks, starting May 4, and Dave will be a month in Brazil at a permaculture conference starting May 13. |
