Judy, I know this is gorey, but how were you chickens killed? Skunks or weaseltypes will bite their heads off and leave the bodies.Big cats will carry then off -Small ones eat their fill. Racoons have to be pretty hungry to kill the live birds usually they only eat the eggs. Coyotes will dig under the wire to get at them and leave with the bodies. I keep a small flock of chickens for 20 years in California, but I think my eggs cost about $3.00 a piece. I didn't have layers- just the fancy ones. The only way I could keep the critters/hawks etc. out was to have a fully enclosed pen with post and wire 2 feet into the ground. There is a Great blue heron that I think got one of my small Koi the other day. It's hard to live in the wilds!! |
