Rusty and I have been thinking about a project that is right in line with what you want to do. Carlos owns 2 and a half lots coming into town that gets sun all day-all year. This is very important since while most are here during the winter months you might find that your lot gets little full sun to grow much more than lettuces. We want to start an "organic vegetable farm" as an experimental/demonstration project for the town. Hopefully we would get interests from the schools, local farmers- everyone. I call it experimental since I'm not sure what all we can grow and harvest during the winter months and won't get eaten by bugs. It will take time to learn what we can and can not grow. We would sell the harvest and perhaps interest the locals to start patches of their own land with organic produce that they could sell-a farmers market. Eggs would be a part of this too. Chickens make the best stuff for garden fertilizer. Flowers would be fun too. We have lots of room to work with. I have a source of goat manure that we might be able to get started with and turned in before the rains. There is no way to make sure it is "organic", but we have to start somewhere. Seed are available here, but not in the variety we are used to. I do bring seed from the states. Anyone with ideas??? |
