If a touch of scotch in hot water will ward off a cold, then a bottle chug-a-lugged will keep you from having colds forever. Right? DDT is like that. the huichol use DDT and told a Miami Herald reporter that they had an adviser to show them how to use it properly and they had no intention of letting anyone from a rich (First World) country stop them from using it. When that report came out, I was having breakfast with a young, recent Harvard post-doc (macrobiology, which studies diseases of whole populations) and he astonished me by saying he agreed with the Huicholes. Not because he too was a Mexican but because they were right. He put me on to a book called "Mosquito". Here's one thing I found: when the new pesticides came out, people used them as freely as they had used DDT. They died. In one case, a whole village in Costa Rica. and finally,something I still feel sad about forty years later. Friends, educated, financially comfortable, good doctors at hand, lost their first baby before he was more than a few months old. Malaria. The wife blamed the recent ban on DDT.
