| I was one of those at the meeting, and one of those who paid the 1500 pesos. My understanding is that the municipality has given 500,000 pesos to purchase a generator (backup power is essential) but that the ejido has no further funds to complete the project. It will take 150,000 pesos (100 households to pay the 1500 pesos) in order to get the system up and running. Without it, the project is stalled. Now, 100 households seems like an easy target, but there is a lot of cynicism around the project. Yes, there is a multitude of reasons why the project could fail. But, there are many more reasons why it is important that it succeed. Our 1500 pesos may be flushed down the drain (oops!) but that is a small price to pay (think, taxes here are next to nothing in Mexico) for the chance that this might work. I'm available to help whomever is already involved in this campaign. |
