GOING TO GUATEMALA/GUATEMALAN FABRICS: Two of us, both women, one a Spanish speaker, are gathering information about a car trip from here to Guatemala this coming October. We hope to visit some special places along the way and, if feasible, purchase handwoven Guatemalan fabrics to sell later to people back here.

We have a couple of concerns you might help us with: one is safety; if we were travelling by car, going to villages in the mountains, do you think we would be safe? What about cities? Is there is an ideal place to cross the borders? Is it safe and dependable to ship goods to La Manzanilla?

The other concern is about whether anyone would want to buy this handwoven yardage? We plan to buy from co-operatives where possible and pay fair prices to the weavers. This could mean that the price of the fabric might range between $15 and $18 per metre by the time we get it back. What do you think? Would you financally support a big sale of our luscious items when we return? Is this price range is reasonable for you?

Is there a colour palette you would prefer?

This type of fabric is ideal for covering furniture, cushions, curtains, bedspreads, and of course, clothing. It's 100% cotton, and comes in a beautiful spectrum of colours and traditional patterns. If you want to see what we're talking about,go to www.coloresdelpueblo.org.

We appreciate your help sorting out these concerns, thanks very much.
