La Nino

Wondering about the cold weather lately? Apparently we are suffering (my family in Canada disagree that I am actually suffering) from the affects of La Nino, which means "little girl", the Christmas child. This weather pattern was discovered and named by Peruvean fishermen hundreds of years ago, who noted that the phenomenon started around Christmas. La Nino is the opposite of the better known El Nino ("little boy"), and brings colder weather, colder ocean currents and dryer conditions to the Pacific coast of Mexico. In most of the US and Canada, winter conditions are colder and wetter. The causes of El Nino and La Nino are not fully understood and cannot be predicted with any precision. Climatologists are now saying that the affects of La Nino will last into spring. Might be a good year to stay an extra week or two in La Manzanilla.
