I am in over my head here, knowledge-wise, but the following case could be made: A foreigner's attempt to own/control ejido land could easily be construed as trying to cheat the ejido out of its property. Would that hold up in court? I don't know, though I suspect the court often sides with the poor campesinos or the rico nationales. If you are not one of them, the court is likely pre-disposed to find you as an interloper. The presta nombre routine is an arrangement made to satisfy federal law by the ejido. The ejido wants to sell the land, you want to buy the land, the feds say it cannot be sold to you. But is can be conveyed to an ejido member. So you come in with your presta nombre and make your deal. When your relationship sours with the presta nombre, I do not think you have recourse in the Mexican legal system. That scenario scares the bejeesus out of me, which is chief among the reasons I am not down there sharing the good life with ya'll. Someone please straighten me out if they know differently. Please, too, answer Carol's query about what new information/law is out that challenges presta nombre ownership.
