That photo wasn't of a Tongan - it was Israel
Kamakawiwoole - a Hawaiian singer who was first
with the Sons of Niihau and then on his own. He had
the voice of an angel and if you've never heard his
version of "Over the Rainbow", you're missing something very special. He went by the nickname
"Iz" and made many albums before he died in his
40's. His funeral in Hawaii was one of the most
touching things I've ever seen - literally thousands of
outrigger canoes surrounding the boat taking his
ashes to be scattered at sea, with everyone throwing
flower leis into the water afterward. It still gives me
"chicken skin" (an old Hawaiian saying) to think about
it.
