Not sure about the new law but I do know that if you don't have someone you have complete confidence in, then set up a Mexican corporation.

As a foreigner you can do this and then you buy property in the name of your corporation. This sidesteps the within 50km of the coast law.

The only down side to this is you need to get it all set up using a lawyer which can be a hassle but it is actually cheaper this way than a bank trust.

Or you can just marry a Mexican or wait your 5 years and take all the naturalisation tests and buy it yourself!
