People rag on golf because golf courses are environmentally destructive. In this climate, they require massive amounts of irrigation, fertilizers, and pesticides. The water use from El Tamarindo is what is drawing town the town's wells. The fertilizers and pesticides wash down the river and into the bay. Additionally, golf courses require large spaces and serve relatively few people. None of the locals in La Manzanilla can afford the equipment or the green's fees. It's not about golf as a game, but golf as pollution. |
