Posible flood relief

Posted by Dave H on July 31, 2008, 9:07 pm, in reply to "Re: Reason for response"

You bet Dorrie, I have some ideas already. Looking at the present location of the La Tigre, it was clearly moved to run around the town when the town was slowly eveloped. The original channel ran through the town but really died in a flodplain/wetland in a wide spread fashion until it picked a breach area in the Sand Bar. Since the whole town can not be moved and being in a depositional reach and floodplain the best method of passing floodwaters is to find a a "planned overflow" area. A well defined and paved channel that is already a road. the will allow excess flood waters to enter that channel when the lower reaches of the river are about to overflow. This may be impossible but I never give up on a challange and little steps can fin ally make a gooe project.

The hard part is I know where that best channel location is but lots of work needs to be done to make that happen. More later when I come down next.

I worked on natural flood relief channels for 30 years in California in one of the most serious flooding areas that recieved over 2.5 inches an hour rains. One storm we got 27 inches of rain in 18 hours, wow that was a good lesson.

Lots to discuss, lots of input needed.
