When the espanoles come to Mexico they brought la religion catolica with them, but the natives mexicans never really accepted, so over the century's they mix it with the local religions wish was like hundreds of deferents gods and gades, evil spirits, languages and cults to multiple gods, the purpose of the "cuetes" is scare away the evil spirits so la virgen can go trough a clean way to the Church is call peregrinacion.
In mexico everything you see in religious events have a purpouse,traditions that go back centurys,is all about god, so think about it and please be respectful.
