I went through all the years and it seemed that more hit land later in the season. Here - http://members.aol.com/Rosendalhe/eastern.htm - it said "Coastal regions have been struck most frequently from September through November with the greatest percentage of the monthly totals crossing the coastline in October and November. These late season storms are frequently quite severe, and the percentages of those reaching hurricane force during these months are higher than during the other months of the season. Sudden intensification on approaching the coast adds to their danger."

I see the databases one can download but the data is not in columns
which can be sorted. I wish I knew how to query the database
with our coordinates and get everything within say 50 miles of those.
Or query what months have the strongest hurricanes or just get the ones that hit land etc. Deanna, can you do this?

Narrow escapes

#15 October 1959 - Category 5 ! This seems to be the closest we have come to being hit by a major hurricane. This was the strongest hurricane ever to hit the west coast of Mexico (the white is a CAT 5). It seems to have actually gotten stronger as it hit land!

18 19.30 -104.80 10/27/06Z 140 958 HURRICANE-5
19 19.70 -104.40 10/27/12Z 140 958 HURRICANE-5

Here is a Wikipedia article - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1959_Mexico_hurricane
on it which say's it weakened after it hit land that differs from the Unisys map above which looks like it got stronger after it hit. In Cihuatlan 40% of homes destroyed! I also read on one of the links that Scorpions were a huge problem after the storm.

There are some good links from that article including a list of Category 5 Pacific
hurricanes where it looks like one can get some database info. Also put "Mexico Hurricane 1959" into Google and check the list.

Came ashore a Category 4. I cannot imagine what would happen if it would have turned earlier and hit our area. From that angle the mountains would not have protected us.

Some are completely erratic. Seems like most are late in the season and you cannot trust them.
