Driving to Patzcuaro

Does anyone have advice about driving to Patzcuaro? I'm thinking it's about a 12-hour trip and I plan on stopping for the night somewhere about half way.

Any tips, including where I should stop on the first night, are welcome. Any additional tips are welcome. Also, if I'm mistaken on any of my assumptions above, corrections are also welcome.
