Driving the coast, south of Lake Chapala or via Guad to Morelia are the options.

We did a leisurely from Patzcuaro, Zamora and south side of the lake and overnighted in Colima. Could be done in a day and not many places to stop.

Going the coast I would overnight in Playa Azul and only 3 hours left the next day.

Thru Guad - I wouldn't do it

6 hours is very optimistic
