Thanks for the responses. I think I have it figured out now. When I crossed the border I had a different car from last year so I had to stop and get a permit. I was given an 11-day permit (the expiry date is on the permit, not the decal) because my FM3 expired in 11 days. I renewed my FM3 upon its expiry date, then took my FM3 documents to the Aduana office just inside the port authority (this is the correct place). However, I was told there that it mattered not what my vehicle permit said in terms of expiry date, as long as I had a vilid FM3 I never had to renew my permit. Consequently, I never again have to renew the permit for THIS vehicle as long as I renew my FM3 each year. I can also travel in and out of Mexico on this permit without stopping at the border.
