As a Canadian, I, too, applaud the election of Obama and the Democrats. I hope that we remember that it was not Bush nor his party that created the mess that that country is in. The majority of white American voters still voted Republican and for a continuation of the status quo. These differences of opinion over what America is really about will not quickly go away. Despite all the new rhetoric of working together for real change, the power structure in place is not about to hand over that power willingly. In the cold light of day, that struggle will be ugly and long. The pressure on Obama to reneg on his election promises will be enormous. As well, the hatred that much of the rest of the world harbours for the U.S. was not contingent on the Bush Administration. Because Obama is not a "God", but rather a mortal human being, he will need to know that those progressive people who support him are there for him every day, not just to cast a vote, but to change their own lives and make the sacrifices that enact that change. And not just Americans, but privileged people everywhere. |
