They are tiny jelly fish. Like other pests, sand fleas, mosquitos, etc. they bother some people more than others. I feel them on my arms and legs but get no welt. However I am careful to rinse under my suit or change/ shower after swimming so those little devils that get caught in tight places don't continue to sting and then cause me to get a rash. This happens to men less often because they were looser clothing while swimming. If you are one of the people that have a bad reaction to them and want to swim you might considering getting a swim skin, it fits tight like a second skin, goes on like a wet suit but is very light weight, and the jelly can't bite through it. I had one while living on the boat so that I could work under the boat when we were surrounded by big jellies, which for some reason we were always were when the prop got fouled.
PS I hate jellies like Indiana Jones hates snakes.
