I largely agree with what Larry said above here about the route.

The only little tweak I'd add is that there is a border crossing just west of the downtown Nogales crossing. It's called the Mariposa/Nogales crossing. It's supposed to be less crowded and easier to get through.

I have only done the downtown Nogales crossing, so this is not personal experience. However, I'm taking the trip in the opposite direction right now and will cross the border tomorrow morning. If you don't hear anything else from me, that means the Mariposa crossing worked well, at least for me.

Also, I think it's worth your while to do some internet research on how the Nogales border crossing works. You cross easily enough at the international border, but you have to do additional paperwork for your car and other things at kilometer marker 21 (i.e., 21 kilometers into Mexico).

Everything else that Larry said is right--those roads through Utah and Arizona are wonderful. Bring a camera, bring a tent, and enjoy.
