Admittedly, we are outsiders, but when travelling in Mexico we made color copies of or important docs. We went so far as to cut the driver license copies to the right size and laminated them.

The color copies were always accepted as originals, and we were able to keep our "real originals" safely tucked away.

We did not try this with FM-3s (we travel on visas), and I would guess there might be a problem passing a "forgery" of this document as the authorities are likely more familiar with them.

Severed heads in coolers ??? Yuck. I read the papers and missed that article til I heard it here ...
