Sometimes the quality of debate on the message board is so bad that I vow never to read it again. But, alas, here I am. Ideally we could be talking about solutions, rather than hurling abuse, calling names, blaming others, philosophising and other related types of navel gazing. With any problem there are facts and there are solutions, albeit often not easy ones. The facts are that about 90 percent of plastic bottles worldwide end their lives in landfills. While this is not ideal, that is probably a better place for them that ending up in the ocean, being burnt or littering the environment. The best solution, short of not using them at all, is to recycle. Okay, recycling is not working too well at present in Mexico. But before we get down on Mexico, the delagato or the environmentalists who do try to do SOMETHING, keep in mind that recycling programs are problematic everywhere. A little research told me that in the U.S., only 15% of plastic bottles are recycled and this figure has been declining over the past 10 years. Odds are it won't happen here ... yet. But that doesn't mean we should stop trying. So, thanks Dave and the rest of you. In the meantime, if all that happens is that those bottles keep out of the ocean and out of the fire, then the program has been a success. All of us has the potential to be responsible citizens. As such, we can - stop b###hing, stop buying the damn things, pick them up and dispose of them when we find them, and respectfully put pressure on those whose job it is to do something with them. |
