Don's description of a Mexican folk hero drug guy reminds me about what we heard from friends when we visited north of Lazaro Cardenas last year. Apparently the drug fight there is between a local, community conscious family who had employed dirt poor farmers to grow drugs, supported local schools etc. and outsiders. When the insiders were busted, the community was, according to these friends, saddened because they knew it meant a much more difficult life for the local farmers.
It seems like nothing is ever simple when desires are involved -- just that responses are predictably self-interested in one way or another.
