Importing cats

Hi, all. We have a new kitten to bring home with us. It has a slight respiratory infection, so the vet cannot give it a certificate of health for about 2 weeks when its treatment is done. We would rather leave before then. Has anyone had papers checked for animals they were bringing in? Where, by whom? Anyone been checked that didn't have them? Where? What happened? Any advice would be welcome. We really want to come home. Thanks.
