One other point: The FMT is a visa for a one-time visit to Mexico. By law, you have to give it up on leaving the country no matter how much time is left on it, and you have to get a new (free) one on reentering. Your point about them not knowing whether you have left Mexico, making this issue mute, is true in many places. As I said, it is not true of one of the two bridges from Laredo to Nuevo Laredo (I think it is bridge #2). It may not be true of the Columbia Bridge crossing, either. The FMT has no legal reentry status anywhere, period (emphasis on legal).
