After I posted above, it occurred to me that, just because the Mexican government says you have to be with the car, maybe there's another way. So I'm doing a little more research. I've sent an e-mail to a bonded expediter in Laredo, asking her if she could get a car across without the owner, given the appropriate signed documents. In this scenario your driver friend would deliver the car to the expediter, they would get it across the border with windshield sticker in place, and your friend would pick it up in Mexico and be on his way. I'm awaiting her reply. I'll let you know as soon as she responds.
