this whole whiteroof thing is fueled by the manufacturers of metal roofing. The environmental costs of producing metal roofing are high and the benefits untested and unproven.
I forgot to say in my posting that cal paint, also, is not environmentally friendly--that is, the environmental costs of producing cal are high, plus cal is non-sustainable. However, cal, in its many forms, has been studied since Roman times and the data are widely available.
Palapas are sustainable, environmentally cheap and being vernacular, have stood the test of time.
if you want to use metal roofs, you have to look at something like the Swahili vernacular, not some californian tin roof salesman.
I am afraid i sound very negative here but i hope this helps you see another side of the question.
