D...has provided a great service with travel info. Rusty is correct that you don't have a real problem crossing at Nogales if you are with another person, I will state however that Nogales, Mx. is a confusing and large border city and the directions south are poorly marked unless you've done this crossing many times before (9 times for me) you might just get freaked out!!! Also there have been a couple of real shoot-outs in Nogales between the DEA and the Cartel gangsters. These shootings have appeared in the Las Cruces paper and also run in the Albuquerque journal.
The problem for a single person is at the aduana south of Nogales. This is one of most frequented banjercitos along the frontera...you must wait in line to pay and then step out of line and get your papers copied with the "paid in full stamp" at the photocooy center (cheap only 25 cents) but you then lose your place in line and have to start the process over...this can take over an hour when they're busy, if you are in a group..no problem, you can stay in line while someone else gets the copies made, if you are alone, you are just outta luck unless some real nice stranger is willing to save your place in the line.
I prefer to cross at Agua Prieta and spend the nite in Douglas, Az at the Gadsden Hotel with its' stained glass Tiffant mural and cross in the AM where they even fill out the paper for you...and the directions to Hermosillo are clearly marked and the drive thru the mountains is beautiful. This is a real short cut if you are coming west on I-10. DB
