Dengue

As you know, there is a Dengue problem right now. I studied this to glean info. The mosquito is the Aedes. While she (only female mosquitos bite) can bite any time during the day, dawn and sunset are the most dangerous times of the day. It is thought that repellent containing DEET (unfortunately) is the best. These mosquitos have distinctive white dots on their sides. This is a tropical disease, unknown in the US or Canada except possibly Florida. So, if you go north, your doc may not recognize what you have, unless 'up' on tropical diseases. What I read said to avoid Aspirin and NSAIDS, using acetaminophen only, as a possible complication is internal hemorrhaging. Get plenty of rest and liquids. To prevent, avoid perfume, dark clothes, eliminate standing water--naturally. I'm not a doctor and this is only what I was able to discover on researching. I found it interesting that a Cuban doctor first discovered that this mosquito carried yellow fever and presented this at an International Health Conference in Wa.DC in 1881. US doctors made fun of him. They were wrong. |
