I believe Mokitos recollections are the most accurate about the history of the hotel but thought I'd add another tidbit found in an old travel guide I have (Pacific Coast of Mexico by Memo Barroso 1986) I think it is a bit embellished but still fun. I like it because it states the hotel's name which no one ever seems to use in it's reference.
Hotel Bahia De Tenacatita
199km from P.V. (Km marker 17)
47 km north of the Manzanillo Airport
1 km from the highway over a dirt road
The region's jungle is full of interesting animals, armadillos, wild boar, deer, etc, but no one would dream of finding a "white elephant" standing among the coconut trees right next to the beach, It's named Hotel Bahia de Tenacatita and has 140 rooms with ocean view, a large swimming pool, and a restaurant(open at mealtimes only). The lobby is an impressive structure resembling a church nave that would hold three or four hundred people. But lo and behold, the hotel is empty right in the height of the season.
This is the spot for thinkers, loners, fugitives, and busloads of tourists who cannot get a room in busy Puerto Vallarta. Rates are $10 for a double, depending on the length of your stay and your bargaining ability. Ask to see the room first to check that all systems work-water, lights, fan, sliding door, etc.
