The first ATM machine was actually installed in Lloyds Bank in London. Given the very wide distribution and usage of the ATM everywhere in the world, the term "Americanization" may not be appropriate. A Googled statistic tells me that the typical ATM customer will spend 20-25% more than a non-ATM customer in a given location. If someone has ready access to cash they will likely spend it more freely. I don't like going to Melaque, but I do so to get cash and, once there, tend to spend it where there is a better selection of goods. Businesses in La Manzanilla could sure use the extra business.

Anybody know when the last ATM in Barra was dragged away by a truck?
