There is some sort of arcane rule regarding this, but as a practical matter no one pays it any attention. You could return across the border the same day if you didn't want to do some shopping NoB. Depending on your plans for the future, you might want to consider applying for an FM3 just 30 days before your next FMT expires so you won't have to be going back and forth every 180 days. Be sure to keep the Ficha de Control de Tramite with you when they take your FMT away. This one-page letter serves to prove that you have applied for non-immigrant status and are in the country legally. Those who use an expediter to apply for their FM3/FM2 visa are seldom given this letter and it can lead to problems. Tell the expediter's office to call you after they have processed the application with INM so you can go pick up "el Tramite" from the expediter's office. Once you have the FM3, the car sticker that came with your FMT is good for as long as the FM3 is.
