Hola Esmitty.

Those are difficult words, because Madre has MANY meanings and Padre just a few. The good news is that mexicans would will use only two or three of them:

Padre
We use it only for priests or old fashioned writing. To call our dads, we say papá as a formal way. The diminutive is "papi" and "apá" (very common).

"Muy padre" means cool, but only on TV or big cities. In la Manzanilla and surroundings is better "Muy chido"

Madre
We call a nun "madre" and also for too formal writing, like "Día de la madre".

We call our moms Mamá and the diminutive is Mami or Amá.

If you want to go deeper, see this (you need to understand spanish):

Madre
