Happy St Patricks Day . In Ireland , where my mother's side came from the Connemara, clifden ,Galway co. we have erected a statue to captain John Riley and we celebrate our friendship with the Mexican people as people somuch like ourselves .What few people know, is that the majority of the Irish soldiers were merely conscripts from off the gangplanks in New York harbour, never being able to see their families and sent immediately to be cannon fodder on the front lines. Mistreated and not allowed to attend Mass, they reasoned that the Mexicans facing them on the Mexican fodder line were just like them and only had pitchforks and machetes as weapons. They said they are just like us and they are Catholics. Because of the horrific penalty they paid they are honored as heros8 |
