Those were great tips Deanna.
So for the facts:
North of Mazatlan just after you get on the cuota there is a Federal police station. 4 Km past that is a Pemex station. They stopped there-9:00am. Had their windows washed by 2 guys that looked very creepy. Not your ordinary Pemex workers.
They were suspicious of these guys but proceeded to walk and water the dogs (about 15 minutes). Giving these creeps enough time to call their friends(oh isn't hind sight wonderful). They proceed up the road to a place where there is a big dip with an overpass/onramp . They could not see until almost upon them that there were 2 trucks blocking the road. Another car was behind them. They had to stop.
The gunmen looked like young, well dressed, college students-go figure.
The truck was taken off the highway and on to the road of the off ramp heading east.
I hope I have most of this right. Please correct me if I've got it wrong.
My suggestion is to stay in San Blas the first night, fill up with gas and get to San Carlos the late the next day. The border is 4 hours+.
Other option is to get to Rosario first night and get to the border the next day. We've never done it, but at Rosario you are 1 hour south of Mazatlan. And many from Mazatlan make it across the border in a day. If you need hotel names let me know.
You've got daylight savings on your side.
