Hi Valerie,
The only reason I knew about the other truckjacking was because I happened across it when I was looking at the newspapers in Mazatlan for the first time ever a few days ago. I use google translator on: http://www.noroeste.com.mx/ and http://www.oem.com.mx/elsoldemazatlan/
There are probably archives. Mexican newspapers are very graphic, so don't look at the pictures.
Sadly, I did notice a policeman was killed at Culiacan on May 1 by two dual cab trucks full of gunmen. Culiacan is where I would try to be far from morning and night. Leaving later in the day when there is more traffic would be better. How about postering your truck with our la Manzanilla friend's missing dogs photos and contact numbers? And decorate it with paint and streamers, dingle balls, you name it.
If the bad guys stop you, they are muy rapido, so conversation is out of the question, but I would grab onto my dog with a quick phrase "Cuidado, mi perra es muy especial" and get the dog out.
I think the safety of travelling with at least one other vehicle is wise and everyone should be in contact via cellphone. If either car notices anything suspicious (hard to see in vehicles with tinted windows) at the Pemex stations or a truck speeding up in front or behind the other vehicle could be alerted and the police as well. One idea would be to stop in at the Mexican police stations before getting each on and off the autopistas and get their phone numbers, talk to them about safety concerns and even drop off a poster of the dogs.
