I hope this doesn't sound crass........ having driven more than a little in MX, I know that we can have concerns about getting in trouble. When we read the story of c2p we are naturally frightened.
To keep things in prespective...... there are many carjackings in the US everyday. I read one article where the cops in Washington DC were proud becasue they cut the number of carjackings from 2 a DAY to 4 a week.
I don't know what the number is in California, but, they are so common that they don't even make the news.

The story we heard from the LM folks is 1 out of thousands of Gringos who have traveled that road without any problem.
