My advice would be to keep using your PC with that version of XP.

Simply download and install a free firewall - I have always run Zone Alarm, and find it very effective. http://www.zonealarm.com/security/en-us/zonealarm-pc-security-free-firewall.htm

This program, running all the time in the background, will prevent programs on your computer (like XP) from "phoning out". When a program tries to send a message out, an alert appears on your screen, and you have the choice to say yes or no. When XP tries to "phone out", you select NO, and XP can't connect with home base (Microsoft).

Don't trust the Windows firewall that is embedded in XP, as it allows certain messages to be sent out (ie, Microsoft messages, without telling you.

Many people are not aware of how much their computers are communicating with outside sources, without their knowledge. Programs like Zone Alarm stop this nonsense.
