teach you children

Great info! I think I learned this in lifeguard classes a bizillion yrs ago but considering all the time I spend in and around water a refresher course is great.
I am going to make a strong suggestion that prevention is better than the cure. Teach your children how to swim at the earliest age possible. Both of mine were in the water and swimming as soon as their umbilical cord healed. Babies instinctively swim. I have no memory of not being able to swim myself. My kids could fall in water accidentally and not panic, come to the top and swim to the edge. They also knew their limits, to get out when tired, how to tread water, and how to swim across a current. Fear, panic and exhaustion, are the most common precursors of drowning.
Having said that, any one can learn at any age. My girlfriend has taught adults, some of which had fear of water to begin with.
