Spotters sounds likely.

When my children were little and we came out of the mall, I always told them to "wave to Daddy". Hopefully, the bad guys would believe that "Daddy" was waiting outside the car and watching us.

In the early '80s, I traveled Houston to Guadalajara usually twice a month on the old highway thru Saltillo and Zacatecas. Whenever I stopped for gas or food, whether NoB or Sob, I always said that I was visiting family a few blocks away, or that I was headed in the opposite direction from where I was actually going.

Pull out of sight of the Pemex or cafe for maybe 15 minutes, then get on he road.

Small deceptive manuevers can increase your chances of having a safe journey.
