As many of you may know, our good friend, Annie Sterling, passed away on May 10, 2010. This afternoon a number of her Mexican friends and a few of us lucky gringas got to attend an Aztec service and spreading of Annie's ashes.

Security from Isla Navidad escorted us through gated roads to the very top of the mountain. With the wild Pacific on one side, the exquisite lagoon in another quadrant and Barra and Melaque spread before us, the conch was blown, Aztec relics were revealed, the fire was lit, and Huitzilopochtli the patron god of the Mexica tribe, and Quetzalcoatl the cultural hero and god of civilization were invoked in chanted blessings and farewell.

Annie's daughter, Jan spread some of Annie's ashes overlooking the places of Annie's great Mexican adventures. The love and energy were palpable and each of us felt the connection to Annie, the beautiful earth and the marvellous sea and sky.

Tuesday Jan leaves Mexico with the remainder of Annie's ashes, which will, at Annie's request, touch the earth in other locations of importance to her.
