Thanks, Julie, I've done all sorts of ocean swimming and emergency swimming. I spoke to Ray today who said the currents are extra strong now. I swam on Sun, but only went from Lora's to the Rocks and it was fine. I'll avoid open bay swimming for a while.

Here are some definitions:

Undertow:
1.the seaward, subsurface flow or draft of water from waves breaking on a beach.

2.any strong current below the surface of a body of water, moving in a direction different from that of the surface current

Riptide:

1. a tide that opposes another or other tides, causing a violent disturbance in the sea.

This occurs when an undertow finds a weak spot in the passage and begins to funnel, as when a sandbar is weak in certain places, allowing for the undercurrent to flow faster in this area.

Surfers often use riptides to quickly return to open water.

Only strong, experience swimmers should use riptides.
