The Netherlands are predom. Protestant, however the south is mostly non-practicing catholic. Drugs are not legal in Holland. Softdrugs (pot, hash) are tolerated in limited amounts. If you have more than 5 grams though, you can be prosecuted. Any trade is illegal. Hard drugs such as cocaine are plainly illegal. If you buy any you run the risk of being arrested. Heroin-users are given methadone to combat their tendency to rob. I can't see the US doing that as the majority of money spend on addicts is for jail only. Anything else would looked upon as socialism. While I think the situation is better than in the US, Holland does have problems. The 'mafia' imports a lot of the drugs, 'cofee-shops' are being closed due to 'organized crime' and trouble outside their doors. I have a friend-of-a-friend in jail in PV for trying to 'export' drugs. Openly legalizing without controls is no panacea in my opinion. Then again, the problems now are terrible. |
